Police searched the headquarters of Schindler Elevator K.K. in Tokyo, Japan on Monday following an accident involving one of its elevators at a hotel in Kanazawa that killed a 63-year-old woman.

The Ishikawa prefectural police conducted the search on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death to check for any safety lapse at the company.

In the accident, which occurred Wednesday, Toshiko Maeda was caught between a moving Schindler elevator and its entrance frame at APA Hotel Kanazawa-Ekimae. Maeda, a cleaning company employee working at the hotel, died in a hospital.

The police inspected the hotel Thursday and searched the Chubu regional office of the Japanese unit of Swiss elevator maker Schindler Holding Ltd. in Nagoya, as well as another firm in Kanazawa responsible for the elevator’s maintenance.

The police have been interviewing employees of the hotel to find the cause of the accident. They plan to conduct more inspections at the hotel with experts, possibly this week.

In 2006, a 16-year-old high school boy in Tokyo was crushed to death by a Schindler elevator that began to move while its door was open.
