When 50 years ago the idea of disassembling a Ford Mustang on pieces and taking it on the top of the Empire State Building came to life, it seemed completely inconceivable at first. However, when the car was physically on the top of the New York’s most famous skyscraper, it was a real spectacle. Half a century later, the celebration of this iconic American car has been done the same way, with only just a few minor twists.

To mark the car’s 50th anniversary, 2015 Ford Mustang was exposed on one of the world’s tallest buildings, The Empire State Building, in its full size, for two days (from April 16th to April 17th). The company has partnered with auto supplier DST whose workers had a difficult task, because the vehicle transformations had to be done in less than six hours  a feature which required a lot of practice. Since this has already been done before, the process was pretty straightforward: disassemble the car in pieces, put it in a small elevator and reassemble it on the building’s observation deck on the 86th floor. Despite bad weather conditions during the night of the assembly, workers showed good organization and professional skills which made them feel really proud at the end of the stunt.

The main difference in relation to the first movement was that new model of the car has changed, but the building stayed the same. Prakash Patel, Ford’s Mustang program manager explained: “The car is actually bigger, longer and wider than what it was in 1965. Remember, the Empire State Building is exactly how is was 50 years ago, so we have a significant challenge.

New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it’s the place where the Ford Mustang story began 50 years ago,” commented Mark Fields, Ford chief operating officer. “We’re thrilled to be visiting the architectural landmark that has been the heart of the Manhattan skyline for 83 years with the newest generation of the car that is the soul of Ford Motor Company.”
